Hà Nội is divided into 12 urban districts, 1 district-leveled town and 17 rural districts. When Ha Tay was merged into Hanoi in 2008, Hà Đông was transformed into an urban district while Sơn Tây degraded to a district-leveled town. They are further subdivided into 22 commune-level towns (or townlets), 399 communes, and 145 wards.

1. HOAN KIEM DISTRICT
Hoàn Kiếm is an urban district (quận) of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, named after the scenic Hoàn Kiếm Lake.
Hoàn Kiếm District is the downtown and commercial center of Hanoi. Most of the largest Vietnamese public corporations and bank headquarters are located here, but the central government offices are located in Ba Đình District (sometimes called the French quarter). The Hanoi City Committee is located on Dinh Tien Hoang street, adjacent to the Hoan Kiem lake.

2. HAI BA TRUNG DISTRICT
Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi is the most populous (est. 378,000) urban district of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. Established as one of the first four central districts of the city, it is named after the two heroines in Vietnamese history: the Trưng Sisters.

3. BA DINH DISTRICT
Ba Đình is an urban district of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. Ba Dinh is the political center of Vietnam. Most of the government offices and embassies are located here. It was formally called the "French Quarter" (Khu phố Pháp), a name that is still used in travel literature.
It's surround at the north by Tây Hồ, to the east by Red River, to the south by Đống Đa, to the southeast by Hoàn Kiếm, to the west by Cầu Giấy.

5. TAY HO DISTRICT
The vast area of Tay Ho district is occupied by water body, such as the West Lake and Truc Bach Lake. In recent years, Tay Ho district, specifically the Xuan Dieu area has emerged as the expat-hub of Hanoi. There are beautiful houses overlooking the lake and authentic Western restaurants. Other popular spots include the Ho Tay Water Park, Sheraton Hotel and Tran Quoc Pagoda.

6. CAU GIAY DISTRICT
Cau Giay is an urban district of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. Many apartment buildings are located in Cau Giay. Among them, Trung Hoa Nhan Chinh is considered as the new city's commercial hun standing partly in Trung Hoa ward, the Southern part of the district. The highest Tower of Hanoi, Keangnam, is also located in this district.

11. LONG BIEN DISTRICT
Before the expansion, Long Bien was named Gia Lam- a rural district largely dominated by rice paddy fields and tiled houses. The inclusion of this area into the urban core has changed much of the landscape. Old pagodas and temples still remain but side by side with new buildings. Long Bien is known for its Le Mat village, famous for its snakes and derivative products from snakes such as spring rolls and snake wine.
